Prejudiced families and a critical public used to make interracial dating a difficult thing indeed. Now, fortunately, interracial dating is not as difficult as it used to be. The constant interaction of people from different countries and races has made most people see interracial dating in a different light.
The perception of interracial dating is that it is something exotic because of the stereotyping of the other race, (for example Asian women can be seen as petite and demure, while Caucasians could be seen as adventurous and outgoing) or that it is the fulfillment of a fantasy. In reality, people donât always just decide to try interracial dating for the fun of it. It just takes place because two people who happen to be of different races or nationalities find each other attractive and their personalities click.
Despite this, individuals who are considering interracial dating should weigh the fact that in addition to the usual problems that couples have, in interracial dating there are additional complications to be dealt with.
Unfortunately, even though people have become less critical of interracial dating, it isnât always accepted. Because of this, couples with partners of different races will need to be more tolerant of each other and learn to filter out unnecessary criticism, be it from friends or family. Couples of different races will also need to consider that if they do decide to take the next step and get married, other factors like the approval or disapproval of their parents will also come into play. Also to be thought out is the fact that their children will be of a multi-ethnic background and compromises will have to be made in their upbringing.
Another aspect is the culture issue. People from different families are influenced by their traditions and culture and will tend to think differently. Now multiply that by five or ten, and you see what happens in interracial dating. These couples need to be more than usually tolerant and understanding of the inevitable differences, because it is likely that the differences are going to be much bigger.
On a positive note, studies have shown that people in this kind of relationship are willing to put more into it to prove nay-sayers wrong. An advantage is that in interracial dating, most partners go into the relationship expecting significant differences between them. Enjoy the differences.
